Inspired by one of my favorite party themes, I thought it would be fun to start something new on the blog–Throwback Thursdays. Every week I’ll reminisce about something 90′s related, whether it be a sweet jam, awesome T.V. show, or funky accessory.
My mom found a gem of a photo the other week, so I think it’s appropriate that I start with one of my favorite childhood shows–The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
There I am, in 2nd grade, dressed as the pink power ranger (along with at least 15 other girls in my class). My brother was a hockey player (Mighty Ducks anyone?) and my sister was a cheerleader.
I was completely obsessed with the Power Rangers as a child. I had to watch it everysingleday and wanted to be Amy Jo Johnson. I vowed to name my first born Kimberly. I even signed up for gymnastics.
Some fun facts learned in a Wikipedia black hole just now:
- Amy Jo Johnson is from Massachusetts! The 8 year-old inside me is very excited by this news. (source)
- The black power ranger was played by an African American actor (Walter Emanuel Jones), and the yellow power ranger was played by an Asian American actress (Thuy Trang). Hmmmm….
- The yellow power ranger died in a car crash at age 27. So sad!
- Amy Jo Johnson was actually a gymnast training for the Olympic Games before sustaining a severe injury. I wonder if she actually performed all those sweet gymnastic moves in the show? (source)
Work It Out
Moving on to my workout yesterday. I walked into the gym and was waiting to give my membership number, when the Planet Fitness lady says “Meghan you’re all set hun!”
Wow, they know me by name. I don’t know whether to feel proud or depressed. But as Andrea pointed out, it’s better than the pizza guys at Fellini’s knowing me by name (which they pretty much did last fall).
I originally planned to take a day off from running, and use the elliptical or arc trainer for the day. But for some reason, I found myself in the mood for a nice, sweaty run. This rarely happens, so whenever it does I fully embrace it. I had a rough plan of what I wanted to do–jog 2 minutes, run 2 minutes, and sprint 1 minute. I wanted to complete 4-5 of those, but here’s what my workout actually looked like:
I didn’t manage to do exactly what I wanted, and found myself needing a couple walking breaks. But I pushed myself pretty hard, and ended up completing 3.14 miles and burning an estimated 370 calories. Not too shabby! After my run, I drove home to do the Week 2 workout of Ripped in 30. Andrea and I have been doing the program together, but normally we have different schedules and don’t actually do the workout at the same time. But yesterday the stars aligned, and we did our first Week 2 workout together.
Wow. Week 2 is no joke. Seriously. I was dying. The worst part (I thought) was the cardio during circuit 1. Plank jacks for 30 seconds, right into mountain climbers for 30 seconds, then repeat. My arms were about to collapse. I’m finding that the first circuit is usually the worst during these workouts, which I actually kind of like. I’d rather get the worst part over with right from the get-go!
Dinner
After my workout I wasn’t in the mood to turn on the oven for a hot dinner, so I decided to whip up a protein smoothie instead. I came up with a Blackberry Banana Mocha Smoothie.
Here’s the recipe!
Blackberry Banana Mocha Smoothie
Ingredients:
1 small, frozen, overripe banana
1 cup of frozen blackberries
0.5 cup of Silk Dark Chocolate Almond Milk
1 scoop of Whey Vanilla Protein Powder
1 tbsp of unsweetened cocoa powder
0.25 tsp of espresso powder
Instructions:
Toss all ingredients into a blender with a splash of water, pulse and liquefy until fully combined.
This smoothie was super filling. I had about half, alongside an english muffin toasted with peanut butter and jelly because I was craving it! Then it was time to relax with all the roommates and watch the season finale of How I Met Your Mother (and I do mean all the roommates).
